The eigth contest's theme was Romance languages, even though France was dropped at the last minute and replaced with Central Asia. The original non-country, Middle East, won with the most ethnic UFOPOP winner to date. Korea's second song won the first round hands down but the first song being one of the least liked ever dragged it down enough to lead to a sensational flop and nonqualification. It was, obviously the first time the winner of the first time failed to qualify.
There was, again, a mistake in the scoreboard which, this time, wreaked even more havoc, letting Central Asia qualify to the super final instead of Italy, who sang in their local language for the first time. The mistake was found only afterwards. Central Asia's real placing was only fifth.
